zaLUG at Fourways Mall, 2025

zaLUG Returns to Fourways Mall — Bigger, Bolder, More Interactive!

We are thrilled to report that our latest zaLUG display event at Fourways Mall was an even greater success than before, delighting LEGO fans of all ages and drawing in families from across Gauteng. The display ran over the weekend (13 – 14 September), and was met with enthusiastic response, overflowing with curiosity, creativity, and hands-on engagement.

Event Highlights & Visitor Engagement

From the moment guests arrived, there was a buzz in the air as eyes were drawn to two standout attractions at the show:

Desert Special Project — A massive collaborative Star Wars–themed build, set in a desert landscape, created by multiple builders. Visitors were drawn in by the scale, detailed terrain work, battle scenes, structures, and the way each contributor’s section blended into a cohesive display.

The Train Yard — Stretching across a large portion of the display area, this sprawling railway scene featured multiple tracks, branching junctions, moving trains, and intricate landscapes. It proved to be a major draw for both young children and seasoned builders alike.

In addition to the static displays, we ramped up visitor participation to a new level with a larger-than-ever race track built for LEGO Technic remote-control cars. The public could take turns driving one of two specially prepared Technic vehicles, competing in timed laps. This interactive experience was wildly popular — queues formed quickly, laughter echoed through the concourse, and many families stayed longer just to get a turn behind the wheel.

Collaboration with Toy Retailers & Weekend Specials

This time around, our collaboration with prominent toy retailers really amplified the event’s appeal:

ToysRUs and Toy Kingdom both hosted pop-up stores right alongside our displays, featuring exclusive weekend specials, bundles, and discounts on LEGO sets and related products.

Their presence allowed attendees not just to admire the builds, but to take inspiration home by purchasing sets on the spot.

Community & Member Participation

Our member contributors once again outdid themselves. From elaborate modular-style city blocks to fantasy landscapes, custom builds, and thematic vignettes, the variety and craftsmanship were truly impressive. Feedback from both participating members and visitors was overwhelmingly positive: many commented on how creative, polished, and inspiring the builds were.

Beyond just the display, the event served as a vibrant opportunity to connect with the community. Several visitors expressed interest in joining zaLUG or attending future events, and we loved seeing parents and children building side-by-side, exchanging ideas, and discovering new paths in the LEGO hobby.

A Sincere Thanks to Our Hosts

As always, we extend warm gratitude to Fourways Mall for hosting us, providing the space and support to showcase our passion for LEGO to a broad audience. Their continued generosity and partnership enable us to bring this hobby into the public eye and spark creativity in new fans.
