Our first display of 2018 took place in Benoni at Northmead Square. Pop’s Toys hosted us and the weekend proved to be a great success.
For two days, LEGO fever took over the mall and the foot traffic never stopped; once again showing the love that people have for LEGO.
The entire ground floor was lined with our members’ tables. Our new black tablecloths, branded with the now well-known zaLUG red brick logo, looked stylish and eye-catching – perfect for tables that held our most precious collections of LEGO.
Some highlights included the GBC which successfully ran at certain times of the day and always drew a crowd. We saw massive Star Wars LEGO collections and rainbow Technic vehicles. An unexpected Steampunk MOC wowed fans of that theme and a very South African township display showcased the versatility of LEGO. The Castle Team’s display highlighted the potential for collaborative projects as did the ever-growing street scene and modular building display. An entire table of Bionicle figures, elegant chess sets, car collections, farms, Jurassic park, a Rubik’s Cube solver and many other creative builds done by our members delighted the public. The public were also impressed by some of the new big sets such as the Taj Mahal and Millenium Falcon, that were being displayed
We had members who were there for the first time, and others who are our veteran builders. We had our youngest and oldest members there. It is always so great to see the bonds formed through this hobby. There is no typical ‘LEGO fan’ – our members are so varied and the people that come and see our collections, are also so diverse. What a great way to build a community. Thanks again to our valued members for your input and to those that work extra hard behind the scenes to make sure events like these happen; your dedication does not go unnoticed.
zaLUG continues to go from strength to strength. We have many more exciting events coming up this year. Stay tuned.
