zaLUG display event at OR Tambo International Airport

zaLUG was delighted to be invited by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to exhibit at Africa’s largest and busiest airport, OR Tambo International, on 25 and 26 March 2023. OR Tambo handles around 19 million passengers a year and is one of only four airports in the world that fly scheduled non-stop services to all five continents.

For this, our first event in collaboration with ACSA, 18 zaLUG members participated and managed to fill 27 tables with a fun and eclectic mix of Lego displays. The Lego Star Wars theme was extremely well-represented, as was Technic, Harry Potter and Speed Champions, not to mention a number of original creations or MOCs (my own creations). A highly exciting debut was made by the train special interest group (SIG) who laid out a looped track at the front of most of the tables and ran several trains along the track over the two days – a huge hit with the crowds!

Also making a reappearance since their last public outing at Brickfair in 2019 was the Micropolis (SIG) which consists of a highly detailed cityscape on a micro-scale. This saw contributions from 14 zaLUG members.

It was wonderful to interact with both arriving and departing passengers and visitors, both young and old, as well as the friendly airport staff. The reception was overwhelmingly positive and those members who participated all agreed that the event was a wonderful success.

zaLUG would like to thank ACSA for inviting us to display at their amazing, world-class facility and look forward to this event becoming an annual fixture on our calendar.
