zaLUG Sci-Fi SIG Showcases “Desert Special Project” at 2025 Sandton Event

On the 26th and 27th of April 2025, the South African LEGO® User Group (zaLUG) hosted its annual event at Sandton City Shopping Mall in Johannesburg, South Africa. A highlight of the weekend was the impressive display by the zaLUG Sci-Fi Special Interest Group (SIG): the Desert Special Project.

This ambitious project—officially approved by the Lego Group in 2024 —was a collaborative effort by 27 zaLUG members. Together, they built a sprawling, 38-meter-long desert-themed Sci-Fi layout spanning 20 display tables. The build incorporated an estimated 2.3 million LEGO® bricks, showcasing remarkable creativity and dedication.

The heart of the project’s success lay in the collaboration and camaraderie shared among its creators. From concept to final assembly, members contributed a wide range of ideas, techniques, and narrative elements that culminated in a unique and immersive display.

Over the two days, the Desert Special Project captivated the public, drawing in large crowds who engaged enthusiastically with the builders. Visitors enjoyed in-depth conversations around the project’s inspiration, intricate building techniques, imaginative Sci-Fi storylines, and the creative process that brought everything together. The event not only celebrated the LEGO® hobby but also highlighted the community spirit that defines zaLUG.
